(to my knowledge), had England (no national flag in the middle ages to help you) more specifically about the appointment. During the Wars of the Roses were the fractions of red and white roses, symbols of their flag. If you ask a question of theatrical presentation, most people recognize a red cross on a white background (St. George), as the English flag. Otherwise, three golden lions on a red flag is needed would be (but not sure if he came into use).

The colors changed with each family and sometimes the power of the rule. Most had a dragon and a lion and a crown.
